If you are a Pentax or Canon fan boy, please go away! I have no use for fan boys. And you know who you are. So please do everyone a favor and just leave.
A little history, I moved to Pentax about 5-6 years ago and bought two lenses. The Sigma 500 F/4.5 prime and Sigma 300mm F/2.8 prime. Both very good lenses by the way. Highly recommended. Long story short I moved to Canon because of the verrrrry poor performance and QC issues I was having. IT WAS a NIGHTMARE.
Fast forward to the Pentax K-3. With allot of soul searching I bought a new Pentax K-3 from B&H. By the way, I hope Adam got his percentage. I made sure to click on the link and go threw Pentax forums to buy. Even though I am not a member anymore.
Pentax K-3? I really like the camera. It literally breathed new life into my Sigma lenses. My first outing I really put it through the ringer. In two days I shot over 2800 photos. No special treatment from me in the least. And to my utter delight at the end of a two and one half day shoot it performed flawlessly.
AF was a thing of beauty. Not blazing fast, but accurate and fairly confident. I use screw AF lenses with the Pentax camera and they behaved beautifully!!!
I loved the AF.S user select function. Excellently designed and implemented.
The layout of the Pentax K-3 is a dream... If you are just getting into photography you will not find an easier camera to shoot with. If you are a serious amateur like myself. You will find it just makes sense! Love my Canon gear, but the Pentax K-3 is a PLEASURE!!! to use.
Sensor characteristics was my second most important test. To make a long story short! It passed with flying colors. Easily beating the Canon 7D. It just destroys the 7D. Come on Canon what gives with the new 7D II? Also the files have so much post processing leeway. I much prefer it against the Canon 1D mark IV.
On to a few pictures. This first shot is a 40-50% crop.

Here is a terribly underexposed photo.. and this is exactly how it came out of my camera. Throw away? Lets try some Post processing.
But, when you make a fatal error like I did (exposure). Which I do allot of. hummm. It makes it nice to know that you can at least get a usable pic out of it.
Frankly it just amazes me. And it opens up so many opportunities that I do not have with the Canon 7D or 1D mark IV. When I was shooting the owl it was getting dark. I new that I could underexpose it a little and still get a very usable picture. Which is exactly what I did.
I am not going to bore you with hundreds of in focus pics... :) If you want to see more pics with the Pentax K-3. Go to my flickr site. HERE
One other thing I thought I would mention. I did a test on the IS system of the Pentax K-3 against the Canon 300mm F/2.8 II lens. AMAZING is all I have to say. It kept up with it tit for tat....
The verdict using the 500mm lens is still out. I am inclined to say the Canon is better. The IS on the Canon 500 II is simply amazing. The Pentax K-3 is excellent at 300mm. When I moved up to the 500mm I found the Canon better.
I am not a reviewer, but my conclusion is.... IF it holds up to my abuse and use? It will be a go to camera for me.
Just a wonderful and unexpected pleasure. WELL DONE RICOH !
