The background was very bright and the bird being mostly white made for a very bad pic.
I processed both of the pics in Raw. The background was so bright you could barely see the bird. It ruined the pic of this rare bird IMO.
First I selected the bird using the magic wand. Then I went to (Select>Inverse) this inverted the photo so I could work on the background. Then I dialed down the brightness of the background (Image>Brightness) -20. Then (Select>Inverse) again to work on the bird. I brightened the bird +10 and did some selective sharpening.
The eye was very dark. I deselected the magic wand selection ( Select>Deselect) Then selected the eye with the magic wand. And brightened the eye only.
This was a very easy PS process that made the bird look presentable. Instead of barely being able to see the bird because of the bright background.
