This is not the best time for birding in Texas but I wanted to get some of the resident birds here. And had a great time doing it.I have a small pop up camper here with A/C... a must in texas. So I bird very cheap. My one week trip with food was a staggering 350 dollars. Birding does not need to be expensive.
Off season here for sure. No birders anywhere around. The brown pelicans, egrets are everywhere. The feeders are empty, but they do water. Getting hot here now and water brings in some birds. Cardinals, white eyed vireo. I personally liked the warf at the beach. Herons, egrets, and gulls made for a nice day.
Went to the reserve about 20 mi. north and not much there. Not worth the trip for me.
This surprised me. A great off season birding experience. After setting up camp I headed to Aransas Pass. About 13 miles from the park. GREAT birding there. Off to the left coming in to town there are some old ponds with a little water in them. The birds flock together on the remaining water. Easy to photograph. Just find a dirt road heading toward the point you want and shoot from your car.
Then head to the wast water treatment plant and walk out the board walk. Great birding up close. Go very early or very late now. The summer heat is very bad and not good for photography.
This was a little different. On the Mexican border. Middle of the day 104-105 degrees. Not pleasant. But early in the morning and late in the evening it is pretty nice and some good birding.
They were not feeding the birds. So I went to the recreational building where they bird in the winter. I set out water and feed. Every day for three days. The birds were starting to really show. The Green Jay, a target of course and other were showing up regularly in the morning and late evening. Just a great place for birding. But for best results I suggest staying three days or so. And start watering and feeding the first day. Don't get in a hurry here. Excellent birding if you wait a few days and do your homework.
Go to my flickr site for the birds I photographed at these three locations. I was pleased with the week of birding. Just amazing birding in Texas. Even though off season. My flickr site here.
And remember birding does not need to be expensive to enjoy and get good results. It's a great hobby enjoy it.
